Press Release - May 2nd

PRESS RELEASE – MAY 2nd, 2006

Youth For Equality are a group of students from different educational streams who have come together to peacefully protest against the proposed change in the reservation policy by Mr. Arjun Singh, which will lead to the reduction of open merit seats. It is now possible for the Central and State governments to enforce up to 49.5% reservation in public and private institutions across the nation.

Students all over India have decided to hold a nation-wide protest against any implementation of the 93rd Amendment Act and express their opinion of this Act being un-constitutional on May 2nd, 2006. We have initiated signature campaigns across the country against this increase in reservation.

The IITs have an intake of around 5000 students. Increasing reservations by 27% would cause 1350 deserving students from the general category to lose out on IIT education. Similar effects would filter down to all educational institutions in India. This would leave deserving students no option but to either seek undergraduate education abroad or in the absence of adequate monetary resources settle for a lot less than they deserve. We are in strong opposition to any such move.

Reservation exists at every level of education in India. The government has neglected the implementation of existing policies to promote social equality. Primary education is neglected. Facilities for education at the school level are both insufficient and poor. It is only through a strengthening of the grass root educational infrastructure that the needy sections of society can adequately avail of higher education and benefit. Rather than pursue these existing initiatives, the Government of India has chosen to take the easier option of changing policy.

The existing system needs to be objectively reviewed and its effect statistically proven before suggesting or implementing any new policy changes. Such policy changes will benefit only the ‘creamy layers’ of the reserved categories and will not reach the intended beneficiaries. It allows affluent families to exploit reservation generation after generation. It is these families that have no need for reservation that will continue to benefit from the 93rd Amendment Act. The Government of India is lulling the poor into a false sense of security and subjecting able and deserving candidates from ALL classes and castes to undue competition, frustration and stress. 49.5% reservation will NOT benefit the needy. We assert that the 93rd Amendment Act is an attempt to mislead the nation’s people and vehemently oppose it.

It is time that the Government of India stop using petty ‘vote bank politics’ and realizes its responsibility to empower these marginalized communities with good primary education, better infrastructure and opportunities so they may compete with the so called ‘upper castes’ and not against them. As members of the student community we urge the nation to raise its voice so it may be heard above the din of political hogwash and their attempt to divide us on the grounds of casteism.

so, why didn't you blog about this earlier? about poor educational standards at the level of schools etc., you realized all this only arjun singh decided to implement a policy that should have been put in place, rightfully, more than twenty five years ago. this is a very old game, an old trick for delaying reservations- think of something new and more interesting.

hey obc voice tell me just one thing...im from IITG...if all facilities given are the ame to those from a reserved quota at the graudation level (in fact the facilities are better for quota candidates because they have additional reservations even in the library books that they get) then why should they get a reservation in jobs or post graduate admissions.

God Bless Merit!

Make India strong! Reservations has no place in higher eduacation. Make their primary and secondary education free.

Rich OBC kids will benefit from this measure not the poor. But India will suffer big time.

YFE - Good Job! We support you.

Thanks..
Its about time somebody made a move, and you did it.
Its not the question of when, who realised what,Mr.obc voice, its not even about who's right..its about what's right. No one in the whole wide world who is well aware of their rights and duties, will stand having to make way for someone who may be lesser qualified than them for a certain criteria. Our country faces the problem of casteism, and if we stand by reservations on basis of castes and not economic capability,we are well encouraging narrow-mindedness.Mr.obc voice, you seem to have a fetish for living in medieval India, with such thoughts and opinions. When we want to build a strong country,we need quality people, not people who are being given opportunities because they belong to a particular caste. Its sad that a citizen of modern and changing India should have opinions like that of yours...we need to march ahead, not backwards.
And as for YFE..we're there for you...let us know anyway in which we can help.

I condemn this move of reservation.
As we all have come up on merit, and feel there is no easy method.
Reserve the education and then reserve the country for politicians,so as to divide and rule, like the British Raj.

Just have a look at the pic which can easily be termed as 'Face of the Protest'...entire protest summarized in a single photo...Defiance at its best...

and this is how the future Doctors were treated...

Use of lathis and water cannons against these students ?
Dont these scenes match the scenes depicted in Rang de Basanti?
All they were demanding is they be allowed to meet Mr. Arjun Singh...
If a HRD Minister cant take time to meet these students, so that they can submit their written demands to him... what can we Indian expect from him, he does not even deserves to be in the Chair....

Its too much Mr. Arjun Singh....RESIGN !!!!

I feel we can make them ( Corrupt Politicians and the Government) feel the Heat by striking them Hard, like the Civil Disobedience and Hit them Hard without Harming the General Public. It is Because of the there Failure to Implement Successfully the Reservation. There should be a Time Period Over which the Reservation should start and after the Pre-Defined years it should Years it should be taken OFF. So should be the Case in the Amount to Seats allocated in the Quota, Seats reserved must gradually decrease with the increase in the Level of the Education. This is because after studying for all these years with unnecessary benefits, Still the Pupil does not match the Quality of Merit then that Pupil is no other then a Failure candidate from General Category. They both are at the same level. Government must implement Policies properly on the grass root level, where the real development is required. Every one that comes in the World (New born Baby) learns every thing from the Scrap. So it is im-materialistic of a child born in the so called higher society and that of the OBC & Others. All the new born babies are born with Equality. Even when we Talk, Interact, Share Ideas and Every thing with others we do not see that a person is from which Caste or Creed, so is even while when we make Friends or Neighbours or Partners. The one who make such differences are the one how have the Power in there Hands (Corrupt Politicians and the Government) for there Personal Gains. They (Corrupt Politicians and the Government) have NO Love for the Nation, in true sense they are Traitors. In recent Example they had even counted and asked the Prestigious Indian ARMY to increase the Percentage of People in Army from the Particular Community. This is disgusting on the Part of the Government to Harm the Sentiment of the Indian Armed Forces which is highly Professional and True Servants of the Nation. This shows that today’s Politicians have nothing to do with the Betterment of the Nation. They are just interested in dividing the People of the Country and Keep the Power in there Hands. Should this law pass or not, we as the True citizens of the Country must see to it that the next we go to elect our Leaders, we must see to it that these People should never get the Power in there Hands. If required we too must be ready to Jump into it and see to it that these people never surface over it again. A recent Example of “Office of Profit” it is clearly visible that the politicians are so desperate about there seat that they fiddle with the Law which suites them.

Kudos for the fight you'll are putting up! Despicable act the reservation is...

Outrageous is not the word to describe this. The Mandal II report is unbelievable! 50% reservation for SCs, STs is way too much!! For a good cause, sure why not? But this compromises the chances of so many others! Lowering the cutoff for these minorities does make some kind of sense but how beneficial can it be in the long run? I mean, if you consider top medical institutes for one, these people have a chance of getting in even with poor performance in the exams and moreover, there are now all these extensive reservations. Now how would they be able to cope with the entire regular syllabus and compete with their ‘upper caste’ counterparts, who got in through pure merit and have proved they have the mettle to be there? There may be some special cutoffs for them even there; I wouldn’t know. But what kind of doctors would they make in the end? Not to generalize, but with all this special treatment, finally a not-quite up to the mark doctor is produced. Another deserving applicant could have obtained that seat instead isn’t it?

It’s hard enough to get into reputed institutes in any field nowadays, what with all the competitive entrance exams and staggering student to seat ratio and this just makes it a hell of a lot more difficult. Less seats, more competition.. finally a loss to the open category students- even those who deserve the seats. Why? Because the government suddenly felt a need to do something for the minority categories…?

Its really shame to realise what sought of people govern us. Its good to see people raising their voice and are jus not any mute takers of crap dished by some vested intrested parties.
If the members of our parliament are so concerned about the OBC and other short-cut-to-luxury quotas I believe theY should pass a law for A 50% RESERVATION IN PARLIAMENT ALSO Y JUST EDUCATION INSTITUES .... These R!@#$% cant even think of doin this in their nightmares also ....

I am hoping many in this country have watched the CNN-IBN show where Karan Thapar has virtually, verbally thrashed Arjun Singh. For someone who has taken the initiative to implement this new policy, he was unbelievably uninformed.. What a shame !! For many in this country who still havent been affected by this issue(i am hoping all have been) shows like this will ignite the need, the wish to be part of this MOVEMENT. It was satisfying for me to see how Thappar , using logistics and statistics , implies that there is no need for any reservations!! and what the Minister is proposing is so baseless.. Watch the show guys and Join The Movement.. and YFE .... hats off, keep it up.
